We are a nonprofit organization that seeks the conservation of Costa Rican marine and terrestrial ecosystems in perpetuity through the management of environmental funds and alliances with governments, the private sector and civil society.
Our objectives are aimed at improving the state of Costa Rican terrestrial and marine ecosystems and their regional environments in benefit of their inhabitants. In addition, we seek to facilitate the development of innovative initiatives in the search for sustainable solutions to the challenges of marine conservation and adaptation of biodiversity to climate change. In the association, we also support the government of Costa Rica in defining conservation goals and implementing strategies to consolidate the marine and terrestrial protected areas, which we endeavor to finance over the long term through the procurement and management of funds.
We also administer the Forever Costa Rica Irrevocable Trust and the II Debt-for-Nature Swap between Costa Rica and the United States, which together amount to approximately US$56 million, in order to provide financial sustainability to the public-private conservation initiative that we oversee, called the Forever Costa Rica Program.
Cooperation Agreement with SINAC
We have signed a Cooperation Agreement with SINAC, under which both parties are committed to carrying out a five-year Implementation and Monitoring Plan to achieve the goals of the program. We are responsible for donating to SINAC the goods and services that it negotiates and contracts directly to carry out the activities foreseen in this plan, thus ensuring the fulfillment of its goals.
The government of Costa Rica, through SINAC, has defined a conservation strategy, using as its foundation the scientific study known as GRUAS II and complying with the objectives established in the Protected Areas Work Plan (PTAP). The strategy aims to:
- Close the gaps in ecological representativeness.
- Increase management effectiveness.
- Identify and incorporate adaptation and mitigation activities related to biodiversity in the county’s terrestrial and marine protected areas vulnerable to global climate variability.
- Establish a source of sustainable financing for new and existing protected areas.
The Forever Costa Rica Program was developed by the government of Costa Rica with the support of the Nature Conservancy (TNC), the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and the Linden Trust for Conservation through a public-private initiative that enabled establishment of a permanent mechanism for provision of resources for its activities. In the Forever Costa Rica Association, we watch over the administration of resources and monitor the progress of program implementation.
